Final Project - Self Titled

INSTRUCTIONS

Theme: SELF-TITLED



This final task involves integrating challenges from three different modules: Typography, Illustration & Visual Narrative, and Digital Imaging & Photography. The task requires us to bring together the knowledge and skills acquired from these modules. Self- Titled is an exploration project aims to express our individuality and reflect on our personality through digital art. The primary objective is to build self-confidence and discover our own interests. For this final task, we aim to create an integrated poster showcasing our abilities in each area. We will use a custom typography created by us (Typo), incorporate a self-portrait for digital imaging (DPI), and weave a related motif through the font and image in visual narrative (IVN). The goal is to produce a visually compelling and conceptually rich poster.

PART 1: IDEA DEVELOPMENT 


1. Write a biography about myself


My name is Siang Huey Yee. I am 19 years old this year. I was born in Melaka, Malaysia. I am a Semester 1 Bachelor of Design in Creative Media student. I have come to the realization that I am now 19 years old and have undergone significant growth since birth, particularly as I am currently a university student. Overcoming various hardships and challenges has shaped me into the person I am today. Through these experiences, I've discovered that self-confidence is the most important for anyone to "Shine In The Gold" in life. In conclusion, the process of becoming an adult has taught me how to improve myself. Therefore, I strongly believe that personal and mental growth is crucial for all of us.






2. Write a statement about my work

I chose the theme which is Growth for my self-titled design as my final project. I have incorporate Clock and Clock Gears to symbolize the gradual passage of time. Additionally, I included elements such as Mountain and Gold, where gold represents my self-confidence and the ability to shine, while mountain signifies the constancy and permanence when overcoming challenges. The presence of Flowers and Butterflies represents new beginnings, with the flowers symbolizing blooming and the butterflies emerging from caterpillars. Therefore, through my poster, I aim to convey that self-confidence is crucial for us to “Shine Gold” in the future. It emphasizes the importance of believing in ourselves and practicing self-love as the foundation for accomplishing other goals. In summary, this self-titled poster primarily aims to convey the concept of growth.

PART 2: DESIGN DIRECTION


1. Sketch

  • I have chosen Sketch 1 to proceed with digitalization, as suggested by the lecturers.

  • Create a circle in Adobe Illustrator.

  • Apply a gradient colour to the circle in Adobe Illustrator.

  • Incorporate the circle into Adobe Photoshop and position it behind my self-portrait.

  • Utilize the Pen Tool to make a selection, then employ the Marquee Tool and opt for "Layer Via Cut."

  • Remove the selected portion of my self-portrait's pants to create an empty space between the pants.

  • Incorporate the short quote "SHINE IN THE GOLD" onto the poster and align it in a half-circle.

  • Integrate clocks and gears into the empty space between the pants by aligning them behind my self-portrait.

  • Apply the Double Exposure technique to overlay butterflies and flowers onto the shirt of my self-portrait, using the 'Divide' effect.

  • Integrate more gear elements into the poster.

  • Apply the 'Blinking Cursor Typewriter Console' from the Effects & Presets to the text "DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE YOURSELF" on the left side, and adjust the speed and timeline to create Typewriter Effect.

  • Apply ‘Set Matte’ from the Effects & Presets to the text of my name on the right side, and adjust the speed and timeline to create Text Reveal Effect.

  • Apply ‘Spin In’ from the Effects & Presets to the text of the short quote “SHINE IN THE GOLD”, and adjust the speed and timeline.

  • Adjust the rotation of all the gears with varying speed and timeline settings to achieve a spinning gears effect.

  • Incorporate audio into the animation, and subsequently export the 15-second self-titled animation for the final submission.

PART 3: EXECUTION AND POST PRODUCTION


Title: JOURNEY OF TIME


Artist Statement: 

My self-titled design for this final project is 'Journey Of Time,' centered around the theme of Growth.

I have incorporate Clock and Clock Gears to symbolize the gradual passage of time. Additionally, I included elements such as Mountain and Gold, where gold represents my self-confidence and the ability to shine, while mountain signifies the constancy and permanence when overcoming challenges. FEEDBACK

From DPI Lecturer (MR. FAUZI):

I messaged our lecturer, Mr. Fauzi, via the private comments section on Google Classroom, seeking feedback on whether Sketch 1 or Sketch 2 was slightly better. Mr. Fauzi recommended proceeding with Sketch 1 and provided suggestions and examples, guiding me to make modifications to my poster. Subsequently, I reached out again to inquire about feedback for the final poster without animation, which had three versions, and asked which one was slightly better. Mr. Fauzi suggested proceeding with the first version for animation.



From IVN Lecturer (MR. HAFIZ):

I messaged our lecturer, Mr. Hafiz, through Microsoft Teams to finalize my sketches and moodboard before proceeding to digitalize the poster. I presented my initial progress of drawing the fire element using the Pen Tool in Adobe Illustrator to Mr. Hafiz. He pointed out that the quote and the fire element appeared too crowded at the bottom of the poster and recommended incorporating more variety in proportions. Subsequently, I updated Mr. Hafiz on my progress, having completed the final poster without animation, and requested feedback on which version of the poster was slightly better. He suggested using Version 1 but advised integrating more gear elements throughout the entire poster.









REFLECTION


Through this final project, Self-Titled, I have the opportunity to fully create a poster by my own with minimal instructions given. This task allows me to explore my own best expression, providing a chance to learn more about myself and convey it through digital art. Furthermore, the project requires the application of knowledge and skills from all three modules studied in Semester 1. This opportunity serves as a quick revision of these skills, crucial for the successful completion of the final task. I incorporate skills from Typography, integrating text into the self-titled poster. I also apply knowledge and skills from DPI, utilizing Adobe Photoshop tools. Furthermore, I use insights from IVN to ensure how I interpret and express myself through visual narrative. Despite the challenge, this task is both interesting and rewarding, bringing new knowledge and experiences during its completion.
