- used 9 nodes to create the best solution to draw out the car
Week 2: Vormator Challenge
Class Summary (Week 2- 4/10/2023)
STYLIZED DESIGN
- Iconic- can immediately recognize the characters even in black silhouttes, such as Mickey Mouse
- Simplicity- allows viewers to digest and understand the purpose of the characters easily
- Unique- memorable and makes an impact on the viewers
- Principles of Character Design
- Shapes
- Think Iconic
- Add some weight to their personality
- Colour
- Establish the Basic Roles of the Characters~> colors play an important role in determining and separating the basic characteristics of heroes, villains, and even background characters
- Think Colour Psychology
- Emphasis, Contrast
- Exaggerate to memorate~> emphasis and contrasting visual elements to make the design stand out by using colours and different shapes
- Harmony
- Every elements in the design should compliment each other
- Expressions, Poses
- Expressive emotive characters, win the audience~> clear visualization of your characters behaviours, quirks, personalities make it easier to appeal to your viewers.
Week 3: Chiaroscuro- Light & Shadow
Class Summary (Week 3- 11/10/2023)
CHIAROSCURO
- Italian term 'light-dark'
- The use of light and dark to create the illusion of three-dimensional volume on a flat surface refers to a "clear tonal contrast technique"
- The purpose of the technique is to increase the scene's dramatic tension by exaggearating the use of colour or light contrast
- It also highlights illuminated parts with predominantly dark settings and the focus point or subject of a scene is brightly coloured
- The reason Chiaroscuro is used in visual narrative
- This method is an excellent lighting choice to differentiate positive vs negative spaces
- Increase dramatic tension~> gives thrilling emotive depth on the look and feel in the scene
- Create sensational effect~> helps elevate fantastical viewpoints to emphasis on the narrative
- Attract attention~> establish visual hierarchy, the main point of the scene
- Make tasteful composition~> the play on negative VS positive spaces creates attractive scenes
Class Summary (Week 4- 18/10/2023)
- This week's exercise focuses on improving skills in using the Pen Tool and the Clipping Mask feature
- Tracing Human Chiaroscuro design
- We are required to apply a watercolour texture to the previously traced human portrait

Task 1: Exercise 1- Vormator Challenge
Vormator is a project that provides students with the opportunity to showcase
their creativity and ability to create stunning pieces with limited resources.
Each student was given the exact same set of shapes shown in Figure 2.1. We
were required to use these eight shapes to craft our own unique designs while
adhering to the limitations outlined in the Rulebook. Therefore, we were
challenged to produce artwork within a strict set of rules where genuine
talent and inventiveness were the most crucial elements for successfully
completing this task.
1) Trace the required shapes which is shown in Figure 2.1 below.
Figure 2.1 The Shapes, Week 2 (4/10/2023)
2) My Tracing attempt of the shapes shown in Figure 2.2a and Figure
2.2b below.
Figure 2.2b Tracing Shapes, Week 2 (4/10/2023)
3) Create my own "Monster" by using the given shapes that have traced
earlier

4) Background of the Character Design
- Research was conducted on the background image to be used as a reference for tracing in Adobe Illustrator.

Final Character Design

with Background), Week 6 (1/11/2023)
Figure 2.6 My Monster "Dracul" (Using Adobe Illustration- Final Character
Card Design), Week 6 (1/11/2023)
In this exercise, we learned how to effectively use all the commands
available in the Pathfinder panel. Our focus was Chiaroscuro, which
embodies the interplay of light and shadow. We were tasked with tracing
pears and sketching shadow lines to attain the intended effect. We utilized
the Pathfinder tools to split the pears into two sections, applying a dark
color to one side to create a shadow, thereby presenting a
three-dimensional look for the objects. The final step involves tracing a
skeletal skull and overlaying it onto the pear as a shadow.
1) Trace the pear by using the figure provided as shown in Figure 3.1
given below
Figure 3.1 Pera Chiaroscuro, Week 3 (11/10/2023)
2)i) My tracing attempt shown on the left of the Figure 3.2a below,
while on the right shown my cutting attempt of the pear
ii) Trace a skull on the pear that was drawn earlier as the shadow, which
my attempt shown in Figure 3.2b below
Week 4 Practical: Chiaroscuro- Colours & Blending Mode (Human Chiaroscuro)
In this Week 4 exercise, we still focused on the Chiaroscuro
technique, but now we're extending its implementation to the human
portrait. Additionally, we learned about how to utilize the clipping
mask feature by applying it with a watercolour texture to the human
portrait traced earlier.
1) Trace the person on the right side by using the figure provided as
shown in Figure 4.1 given below

2) Steps of my tracing attempt shown in the figures below

traced earlier

FEEDBACK
Week 6:
In Week 6, I attended the physical session to receive feedback from our lecturer, Mr. Hafiz. He recommended that I change the colour of the horn in my character design to closely match the scales on the body. Additionally, I was advised to manually trace the background in Adobe Illustrator instead of simply applying a background image sourced from the internet.
REFLECTION
While completing this exercise, I acquired a wealth of new knowledge, particularly regarding the effective use of the Pen Tool. This skill is not only valuable for this specific task but also for various other projects, making it highly beneficial to me. Furthermore, I discovered that with a thorough understanding of the tools in Adobe Illustrator, I can produce artwork that is exceptionally captivating and impressive. Additionally, this exercise offers students a genuine opportunity to unleash our creativity and imagination, and I genuinely enjoyed the experience.
