Week 6: Composition - Visual, Types and Shots

BASIC COMPOSITION VISUAL RULES
  • Visual Narrative - visual in the scene in the scene complements the subject focus and reflect the narrative
  • Visual Flow - scene has clear flow of visual that directs viewer's eyes
  • Visual Balance - visuals in arrange to balance the composition in the scene by visualize and focus the subject matters
    • Different types of shots:
      • Establishing
      • Bird's Eye View
      • Frame within A Frame
      • Medium Shot
      • Close-up
      • Worm's Eye View
  • Visual Hierarchy - visuals in arrange in such ways that directs viewer's eyes to specific details first

Week 7: Composition - Fore, Mid and Background

DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANES

  • Foreground
    • Example: using size differences and colour contrast to highlight foreground as main focus
  • Middle-ground
    • Example: using size differences and light/shadow contrast to highlight the middle-ground as main focus
  • Background

DESIGN FLOW - good arrangement of visual focus that indicate a sense of movement  and rhythm in the design which will influence the way the viewer will digest the content

Class Summary (Week 7- 8/11/2023)
  • We completed an exercise on Transparency Gradient and Noise to enhance our understanding of creating textures. This involved adding shading to illustrations through the utilization of the Grain Effect in conjunction with linear, radial, and freeform gradients.
    • Exercise 1: Apply Grain Effect on Triangles (with lecturer guidance)

  • Exercise 2: Apply Grain Effect on People (Self Attempt)

Week 8: Pencil Tool (replacement class)

Class Summary (Week 8- 15/11/2023)

  • On this week, we are being introduced to the Pencil Tool
  • Exercises were provided for us to improve and given chance to utilize the skills of using the Pencil Tool
Exercise 1:
- Change the original shape of the letterform from the font type Bohemian Soul

Task 2: Editorial Illustration (Decisive Moment) - Urban Legends

For this Task 2, we are required to create an editorial illustration representing a chosen text. Our topic for this task 2 is urban legends, and we need to find a story to interpret its decisive moment or climax. Ultimately, we are obligated to produce a limited animation for this task. The objective of this task is to enhance our creative thinking skills and effectively managed the hierarchy of information from the text and showcasing it through our editorial illustration.

1) Research

  • I have done some research on the urban legend stories in Malaysia, and at last I have chosen the urban legend of the Yellow Volkswagen on the Karak Highway

  • The video shown below was created by Volkswagen Malaysia channel itself to celebrate Halloween, describing the urban legend of the Yellow Volkswagen on the Karak Highway.

  • I have used some references from the website to complete my summary of the story (https://coconuts.co/kl/features/creepiest-malaysian-urban-legends-part-one/)

Figure 1.1 Story Research, Week 6 (1/11/2023)

2) Moodboard/References
  • I have created a concept mood board, referencing various Art Deco styles, colour schemes, and an overall visual direction which helped me to form a clear image for the interpretation of my illustration
Figure 2.1 Moodboard, Week 6 (1/11/2023)

3) Rationale
  • I have written the rationale of my chosen urban legend and the way I have interpret it

Figure 3.1 Rationale, Week 7 (8/11/2023)

4) Sketches
  • I have drawn sketches before I start digitalizing my illustration
Figure 4.1 Rough sketch, Week 7 (8/11/2023)

  • I presented the rough sketch above to my lecturer, Mr. Hafiz, and received advice to modify it. The feedback pointed out that the sketch appeared too flat and did not effectively convey the distinctions between the foreground, mid-ground, and background.

Figure 4.3 Sketch after Modified (Portrait), Week 8 (15/11/2023)

  • I sought advice from my lecturer to finalize the sketch before proceeding with the digitalization of the composition. The sketch on Figure 4.2 was noted to be too overlapped, potentially causing confusion for the viewer.

5) Final Composition (Without Animation)

Figure 5.2 Final Submission, Week 8 (15/11/2023)

6) GIF Animation
  • I made my initial attempt at the GIF animation and later realized that the trees should be oriented towards the right side to convey the impression that the cars are moving forward, rather than backward as in the first attempt.

Figure 6.1 GIF Animation (1st attempt), Week 9 (22/11/2023)

  • I have used the ruler guidelines to avoid the misalignment of the trees and clouds.

Figure 6.3 My Progress 2, Week 9 (22/11/2023)

Figure 6.4 My Progress 3, Week 9 (22/11/2023)

  • Then, I proceeded with the 2nd attempt at my GIF animation, in which I adjusted the moving direction of the trees.

Figure 6.5 GIF Animation (2nd attempt), Week 9 (23/11/2023)

  • I have sought advice for modifications from my lecturer to finalize my GIF animation before submitting the final work for grading. It was suggested that I make some modifications to the person's eyes to look in the slightly right direction to look at the Yellow Volkswagen, minimize the movement of the clouds, and adjust the delay time of the frames to be slightly faster.

Final GIF Animation
  • After getting feedback from my lecturer, I have made modifications to my GIF animation.

FEEDBACK

Back to OUTLINE

Week 7:
In Week 7, I attended the physical session to receive feedback from our lecturer, Mr. Hafiz. He recommended making modifications to my rough sketch as it appeared too flat and lacked the layering of foreground, mid-ground, and background.

Week 8:
In Week 8, I messaged our lecturer, Mr. Hafiz, on Microsoft Teams to finalize my sketches before proceeding to the digitization of the composition. He suggested avoiding excessive overlapping, as it may cause confusion for the viewer and decrease the visibility of the subject.

Week 9:
In Week 9, I messaged our lecturer, Mr. Hafiz, on Microsoft Teams to finalize my GIF animation before submitting it for grading. He suggested that I make some modifications to the person's eyes to look in the slightly right direction to look at the Yellow Volkswagen, minimize the movement of the clouds, and adjust the delay time of the frames to be slightly faster.

REFLECTION

Throughout this exercise, I had the opportunity to learn how to identify the climax or turning point of a story. I also expanded my knowledge of urban legends from my own country and others during my research for selecting a topic. Furthermore, I applied the knowledge I had previously acquired in this task by using tools such as the Pen Tool, Selection Tool, Shaper Tool, and Pencil Tool. I incorporated textures and gradients into the composition as well. In addition, I gained insights into highlighting the main focus by adjusting size or color contrast. I learned about the differences between the foreground, mid-ground, and background, which I demonstrated by overlapping objects to emphasize different planes. This task required the creation of a GIF animation for the decisive moment as the final submission, with subtle animation only on the secondary action. Therefore, I had the opportunity to apply all my learning outcomes to successfully complete this task.
