REFLECTIONS

Experience

Throughout my journey of learning typography, I found it to be both challenging and interesting. This was my first exposure to typography, and initially, I had a simplistic impression of it as something easy and related to letters. However, over the course of 14 weeks, I gained a deeper understanding of what typography truly entails. During this period, I had the opportunity to explore type expression, where I used only type to convey words with minimal graphical elements. Additionally, I delved into the complexity of layout design, learning how to adjust font type, font size, leading, characters per line, alignment, paragraph spacing, and more. I applied these skills in creating my own editorial layout. One fascinating aspect of the course was the chance to design my own font. I experimented with different writing styles using three pens with varying nibs. After selecting a specific writing style, I digitized it using Adobe Illustrator. The final step involved transferring the font to FontLab 7 to create my own font, which I then applied to a black and white poster. In conclusion, this typography module provided me with a wealth of knowledge and skills, encompassing various aspects of typography and design.

Observations

Throughout the Typography module, I've become more observant to the small details of type. I now notice slight variations in typefaces, consistently analyzing those used in advertising and on signboards. Moreover, I've identified the significant differences between Sans Serif and Serif fonts. Previously, I hadn't fully grasped the impact of these fonts on readability. Sans Serif fonts, lacking decorative tails, offer simplicity and clarity, making them more suitable for book layouts. I've also developed a heightened sensitivity to letter alignment and font usage. I often observe instances where banners use fonts that are not conducive to easy reading. Therefore, I noticed that Typography really plays significant role in our daily lives.

Findings

Throughout all these tasks, I've discovered that Typography involves more than just arranging letters or exploring different typefaces creatively. There are numerous rules and guidelines to follow, requiring careful consideration of alignment styles for optimal readability, visibility, and cleanliness for readers or viewers. The goal is to ensure that the type or text effectively conveys its intended meaning. Contrary to simply applying what looks good in layouts, Typography demands a keen focus on details such as anatomy, kerning, leading, paragraph spacing, and letter consistency. This realization has made me appreciate the challenges of Typography, but it has also provided me with a wealth of new knowledge in the field, transforming me into a more attentive individual attuned to every details.
