REFLECTIONS
Experience
Through this Design Research Methodology module, I encountered several challenges at the beginning of my first task, where I couldn’t decide which specialization to choose for my research. To make an informed decision, I did extensive research and watched the introduction videos for each of the five specializations. After much contemplation, I decided to go with the UI/UX specialization. However, this decision led to another challenge: choosing my research topic. I was slightly confused and couldn't make a final decision on which topic to pursue. Fortunately, my lecturer, Ms. Anis, provided invaluable guidance. I proposed three ideas to her, and she advised me to go with the topic I am working on now, suggesting that it was more interesting and different from my classmates' topics. This guidance not only helped me narrow down my focus but also prevented me from choosing a topic that might have been redundant with others.
Finding three research articles related to my topic proved to be another daunting task. Initially, I struggled, but Ms. Anis suggested using Google Scholar and ResearchGate for better search results. This advice was a game-changer, and I managed to find relevant articles that provided a solid foundation for my research. After finalizing my research topic and selecting the articles, I moved on to Task 1. Throughout this task, I continuously sought feedback from Ms. Anis, which was instrumental in refining my work. Each piece of feedback was invaluable, guiding me to make necessary modifications and improvements.
Successfully completing Task 1 gave me the confidence to proceed to Task 2. However, I faced a significant challenge in summarizing my findings. As someone who tends to see every point as important, I found it difficult to condense the information. Fortunately, with Ms. Anis' patient guidance, I managed to overcome this hurdle. Her support helped me focus on the key points without losing the essence of my research.
Task 3 presented a new set of challenges. Gathering primary data for my research topic required me to find respondents for my survey. This was particularly challenging as I needed to ensure that my target audience, Apple iPhone users, participated. I used various platforms, such as WhatsApp and Instagram, to reach out to family, friends, and classmates. Despite the initial struggle, I was able to get 82 respondents to complete my survey. This enabled me to proceed with data analysis and discussion, crucial steps for completing Task 3.
Observation
Throughout Tasks 1 to 3, I observed significant personal and academic growth. I have become more knowledgeable and have a better understanding of my research topic regarding the role of emotional design elements in enhancing user experience on Apple iPhones. I also noticed that I am becoming more familiar with writing research essays, conducting data analysis, and citing references. This module has significantly improved my English writing skills, as it required a high level of writing proficiency. Additionally, my communication skills have strengthened. Constantly communicating with my lecturers for feedback and inquiries enabled me to complete these tasks more effectively and efficiently.
Findings
I found that I am grateful for taking this module as a core requirement, as it allowed me to delve deeply into the field of UI/UX, which is also my chosen specialization for the next semester. I have gained a wealth of knowledge about which aspects of UI/UX design to focus on as a future UI/UX designer to enhance user experience. Additionally, I discovered that these research findings are crucial for the continuous improvement of UI/UX design in any product. The experience has also taught me the importance of perseverance, seeking guidance, and being open to feedback. It has been a transformative journey, equipping me with the skills and knowledge needed for my future career in UI/UX design.
