Week 3 Lecture: Project 1 EX1 - Audio Dubbing Exercise

Class Summary (Week 3 - 9/5/2024)

  • Mr. Martin has provided some pre-class materials for us to review before the class, and we need to complete a quiz in Google Form on this topic.
  • We were asked to separate into groups of about six or seven members each to complete the spreadsheet breakdown regarding the selected section of the movie "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once".
  • Additionally, we were assigned homework to record the dialogues from "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" using our mobile phones and to prepare all the required sound effects, such as hard sound effects and ambient sound before next week's class.

Class Summary (Week 4 - 16/5/2024)
  • Mr. Martin has provided some pre-class materials for us to review before the class, and we need to complete a quiz in Google Form on this topic.
  • We were asked to complete Project 1 task before 11:59 PM on May 19th
  • We were asked to update and complete our Blog before 11:59 PM on May 22nd, following the list provided by Mr. Martin on Microsoft Teams.

Week 9 Lecture: Project 1 EX2 - Audio Editing (Sound Shaping)

Class Summary (Week 9 - 20/6/2024)

  • Mr. Martin has asked us to prepare well with our stop-motion trial shoot materials before next week's actual shoot in the studio, as each group has only one hour to shoot two scenes, one with clay and the other with paper cutouts.
  • We were assigned to several groups for this stop motion trial shoot, each consisting of 4 or 5 members.
  • Mr. Martin also guided us on Project 1 Exercise 2, where we completed a class exercise using audio provided by him. Additionally, we were required to record our own 5-second voice clips and complete the 5 sound shaping tasks using Adobe Audition.

PROJECT 1 EXERCISE 1 - AUDIO DUBBING

BACK TO OUTLINE

Week 3

During Week 3's class session, Mr. Martin assigned homework for us to record all the dialogues from "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" using our mobile phones. We were also required to prepare all the necessary sound effects, including hard sound effects and ambience sounds to complete this task.

I have uploaded all my recorded dialogues to my Google Drive folder in Project 1.

I have also uploaded the sound effects I downloaded from sources like "FreeSound" and "YouTube".

Week 4

During the Week 4 class session, we were required to complete the editing of Project 1 by adding the dialogues and sound effects to each respective scene. Additionally, we had to adjust the volume of the sounds to ensure they harmonized well with each other.

PROJECT 1 EXERCISE 2 - SOUND SHAPING

BACK TO OUTLINE

Week 9

During the Week 9 class session, Mr. Martin guided us by showing examples of a class exercise using audio from previous seniors, provided by him. With his guidance, we used this audio to complete a class exercise. The Google Drive link provided below contains the class exercise I completed along with my attempt at the 5 sound shaping tasks.

After this class session with Mr. Martin, he asked us to complete our Project 1 Exercise 2 by recording our own voices with a 5-second audio clip. We were to use our own recorded voices and perform sound shaping with 5 different sound shaping tasks: voice of a phone call, voice coming from inside a closet, voice from a toilet/bathroom, voice coming from underground cave, and alien/orc voice. We were required to complete this exercise using Adobe Audition.

I used the Parametric Equalizer and adjusted the band of the audio to change its frequency, making it sound more realistic as a phone call voice. By fine-tuning the frequency, I was able to replicate the characteristic sound quality of a voice transmitted over a phone line.

I also used the Parametric Equalizer and adjusted the band of the audio to change its frequency, making it more realistic for a voice coming from inside a closet.

I used the Reverb effect and utilized the "Bigger Room Ambience" preset to shape the voice to sound like it is in a toilet or bathroom. Additionally, I adjusted the decay time to achieve my idealistic voice effect for the toilet/bathroom setting.

I also used the Reverb effect to shape the voice to sound like it is coming from an underground cave. I utilized the "Pumping Reverb" preset and adjusted the decay time to create a more realistic underground cave voice effect.

I used the Flanger effect with the "Teleport" preset to shape the sound into an Alien/Orc voice. I also adjusted the initial delay time, final delay time and stereo phasing to achieve the desired effect for the Alien/Orc voice.

FEEDBACK

BACK TO OUTLINE

Week 4

Mr. Martin suggested that we use Audio Transitions Effects for smoother transitions between sound effects. This creates a more natural listening experience and prevents any audio from standing out or causing disharmony.

Week 9

Mr. Martin recommended that we explore the effects and presets available in Adobe Audition during the class exercise. He encouraged us to experiment with the sound, making various adjustments to see how they affect the audio. This approach helps us gain a deeper understanding of how each adjustment influences the sound which allowing us to explore and manipulate audio more creatively.

REFLECTION

BACK TO OUTLINE

During completing this Exercise 1 task, I had the opportunity to learn to identify suitable sound effects for specific scenes. I tried audio dubbing for the first time, dubbing dialogue from the movie "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" as part of an assignment for Project 1 Exercise 1. I was also given the chance to utilize new skills in Adobe Premiere Pro, learning how to add audio transition effects, monitor and adjust volume, and sequence audio clips. I am very pleased with this experience, as it allowed me to accomplish my first audio dubbing independently, and I truly appreciate it.

While completing this Exercise 2 task, I learned new skills and gained knowledge in audio editing and sound shaping. I had the opportunity to apply these skills using Adobe Audition for this Project 1 Exercise 2. I explored how different effects can alter the characteristics of a voice, discovering how adjustments such as decay time, delay time, and dry and wet output levels can produce various auditory effects. This experience allowed me to understand how each effect changes the voice's quality and how these adjustments can create distinct listening experiences.
