REFLECTIONS

BACK TO OUTLINE

Experience

Throughout Tasks 1 to 3, I faced various challenges and gained invaluable knowledge. Task 1 introduced me to the complexities of typographic systems, where I learned about eight different systems and how to create unique typefaces inspired by nature. In Task 2, I designed a word mark that required balancing creativity and uniqueness, which was particularly challenging given the common theme I chose. Task 3 further developed my technical skills in Adobe Illustrator and FontLab, enhancing my ability to digitize and refine typefaces with meticulous attention to detail. Each task progressively built upon my ability to balance creativity with precision, significantly improving my design capabilities.

Observations

Through these tasks, I observed the importance of various design principles and how they contribute to effective typography. Task 1 highlighted the significance of alignment, balance, and detailed representation in creating readable and focused text. In Task 2, I became more attuned to the emotional impact of colour choices and the necessity of a unique perspective in design. Task 3 underscored the critical need for consistency in letterforms and the powerful effect of small adjustments on overall readability and impression. These observations deepened my understanding of the nuanced elements that differentiate good design from great design.

Findings

The exercises across these tasks revealed key insights into typography and design. In Task 1, I discovered that creativity in typographic systems can transform ordinary text layouts into engaging designs. Task 2 taught me that simplicity and focus on letterforms over graphical elements can make a word mark more memorable and effective. Task 3 emphasized the balance between aesthetics and functionality, demonstrating that clarity and refinement are essential for versatile and impactful typefaces. Collectively, these findings have enriched my approach to typography, fostering a balance between creative expression and practical application.
