LECTURES

BACK TO OUTLINE

Class Summary (Week 1 - 23/9/2024)

  • During the first week, Mr. Zeon briefed us on the Module Information Booklet (MIB) and explained the first task, which involves creating a draft proposal for a mobile application. We are required to consider three different apps before deciding on the final one for the proposal presentation.
  • Mr. Zeon also recommended that we begin by researching the ratings and reviews of each mobile application and conducting user testing ourselves. He suggested taking screenshots of critical reviews related to the app's UI or UX while we are using it.

Class Summary (Week 2 - 30/9/2024)

  • In the Week 2 session, Mr. Zeon lectured us on User-Centered Design (UCD), User Experience (UX) Design, and User Interaction (UI) Design. He also explained the User-Centered Design process that we will conduct later.
  • Mr. Zeon provided detailed information about the Final Mobile Application Proposal Presentation, which we will proceed with after completing the draft proposal and deciding on the final mobile application. Additionally, he shared a list of what should be included in the mobile application proposal presentation.
  • He also held a feedback session to check on our progress and provided useful feedback for us to improve our work.

Class Summary (Week 3 - 7/10/2024)

  • Mr. Zeon introduced us to the importance of Usability and its key principles, including Consistency, Simplicity, Visibility, Feedback and Error Prevention in the Week 3 session, .
  • Mr. Zeon also reminded us that next week, Week 4, is the due date for the Final Mobile Application Proposal Presentation, where we will conduct our presentation during the class session with a 5-minute time limit per individual.
  • He also held another feedback session to check on our progress and provided useful feedback for us to improve our work.

Class Summary (Week 4 - 14/10/2024)

  • During Week 4, we completed our Final Mobile Application Proposal Presentation, with each individual having a 5-minute time limit.
  • Mr. Zeon asked relevant questions and provided feedback to clarify certain points after listening to our presentations.

INSTRUCTIONS

BACK TO OUTLINE

Module Information Booklet

Mr. Zeon has asked us to create a proposal slides for mobile application project where we are required to redesign an existing app that are needed modification and development in terms of their user experience or interface design. We should began with our proposal draft for this project to get a preliminary approval from Mr. Zeon.

Requirements:

Things to include in the proposal presentation slides:

1. Introduction

  • Outline the purpose of the proposal.
  • Discuss the significance of mobile app design and its influence on user experience.

2. Background and Context
  • Provide an overview of the current mobile application and its existing design.
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the current design.
  • Highlight the user demographics and their needs for the application.

3. Goals and Objectives
  • Clarify the objectives for the redesign.
  • Identify the primary and secondary goals for the new design.
  • Describe how the new design will meet user needs and enhance the user experience.

4. User Research
  • Detail the user research methods to be employed.
  • Explain the approach for gathering user feedback and insights.
  • Present a plan for user testing and validation.

5. References
  • List any references used for research and inspiration, such as articles, books, or design examples.

DRAFT PROPOSAL

During the first week, Mr. Zeon asked us to begin our draft proposal by selecting three mobile applications that we intend to redesign.

The three mobile applications I chose are:
  • Moovit
  • Petron
  • Sephora

Mobile Application Draft Proposal Presentation

In the Week 2 session, I shared my draft proposal progress with Mr. Zeon, and after reviewing it, he recommended that I proceed with either the Moovit app or the Sephora app for my final proposal. After careful consideration, I decided to focus on the Moovit app for the redesign. I chose Moovit because it has more noticeable issues and weaknesses in its UI/UX design compared to Sephora. Furthermore, Moovit has a large and diverse user base, which will make it easier to conduct thorough user testing. Additionally, there aren't many public transportation map or navigation apps like Moovit, which adds more value to improving its design.

FINAL PROPOSAL

During Week 3, I presented my progress to Mr. Zeon during the feedback session. I ensured that I carefully followed all the requirements outlined in the Week 2 lecture slides which making sure to include everything needed in my proposal. To prevent any missing contents, I created a detailed Table of Contents at the beginning of the document before proceeding to the main sections. For gathering insights on the user demographics of the Moovit app, I utilized SimilarWeb, which provided useful data on gender, nationality, and age group.

Additionally, Mr. Zeon also reminded me to include a more comprehensive analysis of the app's weaknesses, along with detailed descriptions and solutions to resolve these issues. He emphasized that this aspect is one of the most important parts of the final proposal presentation, so it is essential to address it thoroughly.

Application Name: Moovit

Category: Navigation / Public Transportation

Application Description:
Moovit is a leading urban mobility app that provides real-time transit information for buses, trains, trams, subways, and other public transportation systems in cities around the world. The app helps users plan routes, receive live updates on arrival times, and navigate cities with step-by-step directions. With its user-friendly interface and coverage in over 3,000 cities globally, Moovit simplifies commuting for millions of users daily.

FEEDBACK

BACK TO OUTLINE

Week 1:

Week 2:
Mr. Zeon provided feedback on my draft proposal via email. He recommended that I include screenshots of the current app design. Additionally, he advised me to focus on ratings and reviews from recent years to ensure the data is accurate. Mr. Zeon also suggested that I proceed with either the Moovit app or the Sephora app for the final proposal.

Week 3:
Mr. Zeon provided feedback on my work during the physical class session. He advised me to add more screenshots highlighting weaknesses in the Sephora app, as my original submission only included two. Additionally, he suggested that I take note of the weaknesses and solutions section, ensuring that I provide brief descriptions for each weakness and its corresponding solution.

Week 4:
Mr. Zeon listened to my Final Mobile Application Proposal Presentation during the physical session on Week 4. He asked me some questions about the users of the Moovit app to ensure that I could find at least 50 participants for user testing.

REFLECTION

BACK TO OUTLINE

Throughout Project 1, which focused on the Mobile Application Proposal, I gained a deeper understanding of how to identify and analyze UI or UX design for an app which to ensure that users can navigate it without difficulty or frustration. Additionally, I explored the principles of User-Centered Design (UCD), which emphasizes designing applications around the needs and feedback of users. This approach made me realize how crucial user feedback is when designing an application. I also delved into User Testing, recognizing its importance in refining the design. Moreover, this project allowed me to explore various mobile applications, paying closer attention to design details. I chose to redesign the Moovit app due to its numerous weaknesses which I believe can be significantly improved.
