LECTURE

Week 2 Lecture: L.A.T.C.H Theory

Class Summary (Week 2 - 10/2/2025)
  • Definition & Importance

    • L.A.T.C.H is a framework for organizing information effectively.
    • Introduced by Richard Saul Wurman, it states that information can only be organized in five ways: Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, and Hierarchy.
  • Five Principles of L.A.T.C.H:

    1. Location – Organizing information based on spatial order (e.g., maps, directories).
    2. Alphabet – Sorting content in alphabetical order for easy navigation.
    3. Time – Arranging information chronologically, useful for events and history.
    4. Category – Grouping content based on relevant categories, commonly used on websites.
    5. Hierarchy – Ordering data by size, cost, popularity, or other ranked metrics.

EXERCISE 2 - L.A.T.C.H

Instructions:
  1. Organize a set of information into a visual poster using the L.A.T.C.H principles (at least 4 out of 5: Location, Alphabet, Time, Category, Hierarchy).
  2. Utilize digital photo editing or illustration software to create the L.A.T.C.H infographic poster.
  3. You may reuse existing images, but you must design and create the remaining visual elements to complete the poster.

Requirements:

  • Poster size & resolution: A4 size
  • Submission: Upload progress and final poster on your E-Portfolio.

I have chosen Harry Potter as the topic for my L.A.T.C.H infographic poster. The content will be structured according to the L.A.T.C.H principles as follows:

L - Location (Where It Exists)

  • Display a Hogwarts Map highlighting the four house common rooms with icons:
    • Gryffindor Tower
    • Slytherin Dungeon
    • Ravenclaw Tower
    • Hufflepuff Basement

A - Alphabet (Organized by Name Order)

  • List the four Hogwarts houses in alphabetical order:
    • Gryffindor
    • Hufflepuff
    • Ravenclaw
    • Slytherin

T - Time (Chronological Order)

  • Timeline of Hogwarts Houses & Key Events:
    • ~990 AD – Hogwarts is founded by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.
    • ~1000 AD – Salazar Slytherin leaves Hogwarts and creates the Chamber of Secrets.
    • 1991 – Harry Potter is sorted into Gryffindor; rivalry with Slytherin intensifies.
    • 1994 – Cedric Diggory (Hufflepuff) represents Hogwarts in the Triwizard Tournament.
    • 1997-1998 – Battle of Hogwarts; Gryffindor and Slytherin members play key roles.

C - Category (Grouping by Similar Traits)

  • Hogwarts Houses Categorized by Traits:
    • Gryffindor – Bravery, courage, determination
    • Hufflepuff – Loyalty, hard work, patience
    • Ravenclaw – Intelligence, wisdom, creativity
    • Slytherin – Ambition, resourcefulness, cunning

  • Sketch
I first created sketches for this exercise to better visualize the layout before proceeding with my final L.A.T.C.H poster. I designed two versions and preferred the second version as it provides more space for content at the bottom of the page. The first version used a table format for categorization, which took up too much space.

  • Colour Palette & Visual Elements

To maintain consistency, I selected a colour palette for my poster. I also searched for visual elements on Pinterest and created some of my own by drawing them.

  • Final Poster

For my Final L.A.T.C.H poster, I made minimal changes from my sketch version. I moved the timeline from the middle to be around of side outline of the poster to avoid reducing the size of the map. I have provided the Final L.A.T.C.H poster in both PNG and PDF formats.

REFLECTION

This L.A.T.C.H exercise allowed me to explore information organization and visual hierarchy in infographic design. By applying the L.A.T.C.H principles, I learned how to structure content effectively while maintaining clarity and consistency. Creating sketches beforehand helped me visualize the layout and make informed design decisions, such as choosing the second version for better content placement. The colour palette and custom-drawn visual elements enhanced the overall aesthetic and coherence of the poster. Overall, this exercise helped me strengthen my layout planning, design consistency, and information structuring skills.
