OUTLINE

LECTURE

Week 3 Lecture: Miller's Law of Memory

Class Summary (Week 3 - 17/2/2025)

  • Definition & Importance

    • Miller’s Law states that short-term memory can hold about 7±2 items at once.
    • Information beyond this limit is easily forgotten within 30 seconds.
  • Key Concepts

    1. The Magical Number Seven – The human brain struggles to retain more than 7 items in short-term memory.
    2. The Paradox of Choice – Too many options overwhelm the brain, making decision-making harder.
    3. Refining Options – Breaking information into smaller chunks helps improve memory retention.
  • Application in Design

    • Use clustering or grouping to enhance comprehension.
    • Limit choices and simplify information for better user experience.

Week 4 Lecture: Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto

Class Summary (Week 4 - 24/2/2025)

  • Definition & Purpose

    • Manuel Lima’s Information Visualization Manifesto outlines 9 key principles to distinguish information visualization from infographics and information art.
  • Manuel Lima’s 9 Directives:

    1. Form Follows Function – Focus on explanation and insight rather than aesthetics.
    2. Interactivity is Key – Encourage user exploration and discovery.
    3. Cite Your Source – Always disclose data origins for credibility.
    4. The Power of Narrative – Use storytelling to make information engaging and memorable.
    5. Do Not Glorify Aesthetics – Design should support function, not be the primary goal.
    6. Look for Relevancy – Ensure visualizations have a meaningful purpose.
    7. Embrace Time – Effective time management improves decision-making and organization.
    8. Aspire for Knowledge – Information visualization should enhance understanding and cognition.
    9. Avoid Gratuitous Visualizations – Visuals should filter and clarify information, not add noise.

PROJECT 1 - QUANTIFIABLE INFORMATION

BACK TO OUTLINE

  • Develop an infographic that visually presents a series of processes rather than text.
  • Focus on delivery mechanisms that impact infographic effectiveness.
  • Content is important but should be considered as one of many components.

Part 1: Infographic Poster (20%)

Instructions:

  1. Choose 1 infographic poster reference from the internet (consult before proceeding).
  2. Redesign the poster into A4 size, starting with sketches and process documentation.
  3. Apply visual hierarchy & typography to improve readability.
  4. Simplify design using colour, shape, and pattern for clarity.
  5. Upload the final poster to your E-Portfolio with an explanation and reflection.

Part 2: Minimal Animated Infographic (20%)

Instructions:

  1. Animate your infographic poster into a looping animation.
  2. Loop duration: 15-30 seconds.
  3. Size: 1080 x 1920 px (Vertical Video).
  4. Upload to your YouTube channel.

Submission Requirements:

  1. Digital upload to Google Drive.
  2. Online post in your E-Portfolio with reflective writing.
  3. Provide the E-Portfolio link for submission.

After receiving feedback from my lecturer, Mr. Fauzi, he advised me to enlarge the text and ensure its readability on the poster. Therefore, I made some minimal adjustments to the font size. The final infographic poster for Part 1, after modification, is shown below.

Part 2: Minimal Animated Infographic

After completing Part 1, which involved redesigning the infographic poster, I proceeded with Part 2 by animating my infographic poster into a looping animation of 15-30 seconds. This minimal animated infographic serves as the final outcome for Project 1.

FEEDBACK

BACK TO OUTLINE

Week 3:

Mr. Fauzi suggested that I further simplify the poster design if I decide to proceed with my chosen infographic poster reference as it has already been refined. I sought his feedback through the Google Classroom private comment section where he provided this recommendation.

Week 4:

Mr. Fauzi advised me to enlarge the text size to improve readability for viewers after I shared my progress on the redesigned infographic poster in the Google Classroom private comment section. He also suggested proceeding with minimal animation for the infographic poster as part of Project 2 – a looping animation lasting around 15 to 30 seconds.

REFLECTION

BACK TO OUTLINE

This project strengthened my understanding of visual hierarchy, typography, and motion graphics in infographic design. In Part 1, I refined the layout and adjusted font sizes based on Mr. Fauzi’s feedback to enhance readability while maintaining a clean and engaging design. Transitioning to Part 2, I focused on creating a smooth looping animation that effectively conveyed key points without overwhelming the viewer. This process deepened my appreciation for how clarity, motion, and timing influence information retention. Therefore, I think this project highlighted the importance of balancing aesthetics and functionality which reinforcing my skills in visual storytelling and animated infographics.
