Design Principles GCD60804 - TASK 2/ Visual Analysis
21.02.2024 - 06.03.2024 / Week 3 - Week 5
Siang Huey Yee / 0369549Task 2: Visual Analysis
OUTLINE
LECTURES
Visual Analysis
- A method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles
- A description and explanation of visual structure in itself
- To gain a deeper comprehension of how a design's formal aspects convey concepts, meaning, or content
- Observation is examining carefully, recognising the visual components of a design, and attempting to articulate them precisely and thoughtfully in our own words
- Avoid reading the explanation or description about the design beforehand
- The observation phase is about looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what is noticeable
- Phase 2: Analysis
- Analysis requires us to consider our observations and try to determine findings about the work based on the evidence of our observations
- Consider the affects on the viewers as well as how the particular visual components that have identified combine to develop design principles that complete that piece of art or design
- Phase 3: Interpretation
- In this phase, facts from reliable published sources regarding the design work (and sometimes the designer) and historical context are combined with your observations, description, and analysis of the piece
- Determine the meaning and purpose of the design to be created
TASK 2 - VISUAL ANALYSIS
Students must evaluate, research, document, and analyse the existing art and design pieces that were chosen for Task 1 in this task. The design principles discovered in that work, as well as the design's size, placement, purpose, and effectiveness in relation to the selected UNSDG goal, will be studied by the students. Compose a 300–350 word visual analysis of the chosen design.
The design work I have chosen in Task 1 is a bronze sculpture. This sculpture is 50 inches (130 cm) tall. This "Fearless Girl" sculpture portrays a little girl standing upright, her gaze fixed forward, and her hands confidently placed on her hips. The depiction suggests her courage and defiance. Furthermore, this sculpture initially positioned facing the iconic "Charging Bull" statue. The sculpture's dress appears to be billowing, achieved through curved lines, evoking the sense of standing against the wind.

Phase 2: Analysis
Based on my observation, this design exhibits symmetrical balance, a principle of Balance. This can be evident in the arrangement of the sculpture's body and face. Aside from that, I have also observed that the design principles such as Movement is being employed on the little girl sculpture's dress, where it was being designed by the use of curves and lines that convey a sense of motion.
Phase 3: Interpretation
This "Fearless Girl" sculpture is being created to convey the message of gender equality, where to encourage women in leadership roles, young women's empowerment, women's education, gender equality, reducing discrimination in the workplace via education, equal pay for women, and women's overall well-being (Fearless Girl Sculpture, n.d.). This sculpture was created by artist Kristen Visbal, the sculpture was originally installed facing the iconic "Charging Bull" statue in the heart of New York City's financial district. Its purpose was to symbolize and advocate for gender diversity and equality in the corporate world.
The sculpture questions traditional conceptions of power and strength. It shows a little girl standing confidently with her hands on her hips and a determined expression on her face. The piece of art challenges the male-dominated financial industry and highlights the need for more representation and inclusion of women in leadership positions by placing this small figure in front of the enormous bull.
Overall, the "Fearless Girl" is a powerful reminder of the strength and determination of girls and women everywhere. The purpose of its establishment was to provoke thoughts on gender equality, motivate people to act, and help organisations create more diverse and inclusive work environments.

FEEDBACK
Week 4:
My lecturer, Ms. Jinchi, recommended that I include an image showing the "Fearless Girl" sculpture facing the "Charging Bull" statue and add a caption below to describe the added figure for clearer clarification and understanding of the visual analysis mentioned regarding the position of the "Fearless Girl" statue. Additionally, it was suggested to include in-text citations in the visual analysis. Ms. Jinchi has approved my visual analysis for Task 2 and commented that it is well-written.
