Task 3: Design

OUTLINE

TASK 3 - DESIGN

Student will now create a design as a response to, or an inspiration for, the design that studied in Task 2 after choosing it and giving it some thought. In the task, student need to incorporate their understanding of design principles. Any appropriate medium or resources may be used to communicate the visual message. Additionally, it is not allowed to utilise photos directly.

2) Sketches:

  • SKETCH 1

Figure 3.4 Sketch 1

RATIONALE:
Sketch 1 was depicted in Figure 3.4 above, was inspired by Visual Reference 1, wherein I designed a woman pushing the unequal sign to transform it into an equal sign. This design aims to further bolster the fight for women's empowerment and gender equality.

  • SKETCH 2

Figure 3.5 Sketch 2

RATIONALE:
Sketch 2 was depicted in Figure 3.5 above, was inspired by Visual Reference 2. I was inspired by the theatrical mask, where I altered the happy face to depict a man smiling on the left side, slightly drawn upwards compared to the right side, and a woman with a sad expression on the right side, slightly downwards, to imply the heavier reality of the inequality women facing in real life. I included numerous slogans on the right side to urge society to pay attention to the gender inequality women face and promote gender equality.

  • SKETCH 3
Figure 3.6 Sketch 3

RATIONALE:
Sketch 3 was depicted in Figure 3.6 above, was inspired by Visual Reference 3. I was inspired by the slogan from Visual Reference 3, "No He or She, Just Human," where I designed a man and woman standing back to back with a gender equality sign between them. Additionally, I drew the Earth under the man and woman to represent that there is no "he" or "she," but just humans living on Earth. This emphasizes that gender equality should be prioritized in our lives.

3) Digitisation

I chose to digitize Sketch 1 using Adobe Illustrator as my final artwork. Furthermore, I made some changes and modifications to Sketch 1 based on suggestions from my lecturer, Ms. Jinchi. She advised me to add more male and female characters in various job uniforms to better convey the message. In the revised artwork, women characters wearing different work uniforms collaborate to push down the unequal sign, emphasizing the purpose of the artwork, which is to promote "Gender Equality."

Figure 3.10 displayed below was the initial digitized artwork. During the Week 7 Feedback session, I was recommended by my lecturer, Ms. Jinchi, to change the colour of the center block sign of the unequal sign to a darker colour.

Figure 3.11 displayed below represents the initial modification made to the digitized artwork. I was also advised by my lecturer to remove the outline stroke from all the characters.

Figure 3.12 displayed below represents the second modification made to the digitized artwork. To ensure that the man character in blue and the woman character stand out, I was advised to adjust the colours of other characters wearing various uniforms. Therefore, I adjusted the saturation of the colours, reducing it to achieve harmony among all the different colours and make them less disjointed when placed together.

4) Final Design:

Figure 3.14 Final Design - "Fight For Equality"

RATIONALE:
The Final Design I have created is themed around UNSDG Goal 5: Gender Equality. The artwork aims to convey the message that we must take action to advocate for equality and prevent further gender inequality in reality. I was initially inspired by Visual Reference 1, which depicts a man and a woman sitting on opposite ends of an unequal sign, I developed the idea of the woman pushing the unequal sign ('≠') away to transform it into an equal sign ('='). Upon suggestion from my lecturer, Ms. Jinchi, I incorporated additional male and female characters wearing various job uniforms into the artwork, as seen in the digitized version. Furthermore, I intentionally depicted the woman's side as heavier to symbolize the inequalities women face in real life. This is manifested in the artwork's composition, where the woman's side occupies more space and is not centered, while the men's side occupies slightly less space to effectively convey the design's purpose: "Gender Equality."

I created this design to draw attention to contemporary societal issues surrounding gender equality, including supporting women in leadership roles, ensuring equal pay for women, ending child marriage, and combatting physical or sexual violence against women. My objective is to advocate for gender equality and aspire to a future where women and girls can achieve gender equality and empowerment.

Furthermore, the design principles I have incorporated into the design are Contrast and Asymmetrical BalanceContrast is evident in the use of pink and blue colours, with the male character in blue positioned on the pink unequal sign, while the female character in pink was positioned in front of the blue unequal sign. Asymmetrical Balance is also employed in the artwork, where I intentionally allocated more space to the women's side than to the men's side.

FEEDBACK

Week 6:

I showed my three sketches to my lecturer, Ms. Jinchi. For Sketch 1, I was recommended to add more male and female characters in various job uniforms to further enhance the representation of women taking action to fight for gender equality. In Sketch 2, I was advised to incorporate more elements on the right side representing men, including items specific to them, while on the left side, representing women, I was suggested to add hands beneath the woman face to convey the message of uplifting women's power. Regarding Sketch 3, it was noted that the composition of the design was somewhat disjointed, making it difficult for viewers to comprehend the message and read the text clearly. Hence, I was advised to proceed with digitizing either Sketch 1 or Sketch 2.

Week 7:

I chose Sketch 1 to proceed with digitization, so I presented the digitized artwork to my lecturer, Ms. Jinchi. She advised me to change the colour of the center block sign of the unequal sign to a darker shade and remove the outline stroke from all the characters. Additionally, she suggested adjusting the colours of other characters wearing various uniforms, so I reduced the saturation of the colours to achieve harmony among them and make them less disjointed when placed together, ensuring that the man character in blue and the woman character stand out.
